A Complete Guide to Breeding Stick and Leaf Insects by Paul D. Brock 64 pages $10.00

Stick and leaf insects (also known as phasmids) make ideal pets, being inexpensive to purchase and requiring relatively little in the way of maintenance. The choice is vast and may include, amongst others, spiny monsters, vividly colored winged insects, placid twigs and leaf-like creatures. This book covers all aspects of ownership, with suggestions on selecting the most appropriate species and life stage, detailed consideration of the species readily available in culture, plus useful hints on housing and husbandry. For the ambitious, the author elaborates on the more advanced techniques of breeding phasmids and there is a helpful trouble-shooting section which discusses potential problems together with a variety of solutions.

Tarantulas and Scorpions (Their Care in Captivity) by Jerry G. Walls 64 pages $10

Tarantulas and scorpions are arachnids, among the oldest land animals on Earth. A new generation of pet keepers has discovered the wonders of these ancient animals. This book gives all the details on their care, offers a stunning selection of species, and outlines their breeding requirements.

A good effort with great pictures and both tarantulas and scorpions. You'll like to see it sitting on your own bookshelf.

This book is our favorite for those whose primary interest is the care and keeping of scorpions. It is loaded with high quality photos and includes nice tables featuring such things as the type of substrate, humidity levels, and even approximate relative strength of venom of many, possibly most common species. Scorpion keepers who own only this book and Biology of Scorpions are leaps and bounds ahead of most others.

The Proper Care of Tarantulas by Ann Webb 288 pages $7.00

Despite a bad rap given to many of the books in the TFH publisher's series, this book is actually quite good. It would make an excellent choice for an enthusiast who would like a grounding in the 'basics' plus a little more, such as a close up lesson on sexing tarantulas. Despite a few simple mistakes in editing this book should provide a newer keeper with a great deal of new information.

Giant Centipedes by Orin McMonigle 44 pages $16.00

The Tarantula Keeper's Guide by Stan and Marguerite Schultz 287 pages $14.00

This book is considered by most tarantula keepers to be 'the Bible' on the topic and more worthwhile than the majority of tarantula books combined. Most not only read it, but read it again and again. There is a ton of good quality information here for all levels of keepers. Further, the author has taken the time to revise this book so it is quite current.

Scorpions: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual by Manny Rubio 95 pages $7.50

A Step-By-Step Book About Stick Insects by David Alderton 64 pages $6.00

This book is basically an overview of stick insects, offering interesting background facts, general care, food plant tips on a few select species, and some very nice photos. This book is excellent and enjoyable reading for most phasmid enthusiasts and you'll probably enjoy reading and having it on your shelf as well but if you need information on a specific species and/or food plant in a hurry we recommend Ghost of the Trees (Walking Stick and Leaf Insects) by Orin McMonigle and Peter Clausen or A Complete Guide to Breeding Stick and Leaf Insects by Paul D. Brock as first choices. If you already have those more practical references then this book would surely make a nice addition.
